Most kitchens incorporate several types of lighting, such as ambient lighting and task lighting. Recessed lighting is a type of general-purpose lighting that works in all kitchen styles. In this blog, remodeling contractor JLR Exteriors Home Improvement shares tips on using recessed lighting in the kitchen.
Plan the Lighting Layout
A properly planned lighting layout can turn an ordinary kitchen layout into something extraordinary. Ideally, there should be one recessed lighting for every four to six feet of ceiling space. Proper spacing is important; placing recessed lighting too close together can result in harsh lighting. Work with an interior designer or remodeling contractor if you’re not sure how to go about this.
Use Track Lighting for Tall Ceilings
For kitchens with tall ceilings, kitchen and bathroom remodeling contractors recommend installing track lighting. Track lighting uses a pipe or “track” to mount lighting and conceal wiring. In addition to providing lighting at the right level, track lighting provides more flexibility in lighting placement.
Factor in Natural Light
Recessed lighting can complement natural lighting in keeping a well-lit kitchen. Consider installing recessed lighting in areas that do not receive natural light, and have a separate circuit for them that can be turned on during the day. This helps even out kitchen lighting without turning on all other lighting in the kitchen.
Add a Dimmer
Dimmers let you change your kitchen’s mood and atmosphere. They also let you save on energy and extend the lifespan of your light bulbs. Make it a point to check the dimmers and bulbs that you buy. Certain combinations, such as LED bulbs and traditional dimmers, don’t work together. If you already have traditional dimmers or leading edge dimmers, make sure you are buying dimmable LED. On the other hand, trailing edge dimmers are designed to work with LED bulbs.
